Understanding Spiritual Warfare: Our Real Battle

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” — Ephesians 6:12 (KJV)

Life can sometimes feel like a battle. We face conflict, temptation, discouragement, fear, confusion, and struggles that seem beyond our understanding. The Bible reminds us that some of our greatest battles are not merely physical or emotional—they are spiritual.

Paul’s words in Ephesians 6:12 help us recognize the reality of spiritual warfare. He tells us that our ultimate struggle is not against people. This truth is important because it changes how we respond to difficult situations and difficult people.

Our Battle Is Not Against People

When we face rejection, conflict, betrayal, or opposition, it's easy to see another person as the enemy. But Ephesians 6:12 reminds us to look beyond the visible circumstances.

People may hurt us, disagree with us, or even oppose our faith, but they are not our ultimate enemy. Satan seeks to create division, fear, hatred, deception, and discouragement. Recognizing this helps us respond differently. Instead of fighting people with anger and bitterness, we can pray for them and seek to walk in love and truth.

Spiritual Battles Require Spiritual Weapons

Because the battle is spiritual, our weapons must be spiritual as well. In the verses following Ephesians 6:12, Paul describes the armor of God: truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God.

God does not leave His children defenseless.

When lies surround us, we stand firm on His truth. When temptation arises, we choose to pursue righteousness. When fear tries to take hold, we cling to our faith. When discouragement strikes, we remind ourselves of the hope found in salvation. And when we find ourselves at a loss for words or unsure how to respond, we turn to God's Word for guidance.

Prayer is essential in spiritual warfare. Believers do not rely on human strength, anger, or manipulation; instead, we depend on God's power.

We stand and do not fear, for our God is with us.

Spiritual warfare should not cause Christians to live in fear. We are called to “be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might” (Ephesians 6:10).

Our strength does not come from us. It comes from God.

There may be battles we cannot see, but we serve a God who sees everything. There may be situations we cannot control, but God remains sovereign. We may feel weak, but His strength is sufficient.

A Call to Stand Firm

Spiritual warfare is real, but so is God's protection and power. We are called to stay alert, pray faithfully, know God's Word, walk in truth, and refuse to let bitterness or fear control our hearts.

Remember: your battle is not against flesh and blood.

So don't waste your strength fighting the wrong enemy. Stand firm in Christ, put on the armor of God, pray, trust Him, and walk in love and truth.

The battle may be spiritual, but the victory belongs to the Lord.

Proverbs 21:31 says, The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but the victory belongs to the LORD. (ESV)
